Dear Irrigators, Please be advised that the SMRID will be releasing 1,500 irrigation acres for the 2027 irrigation season at the current capital asset charge. We received a significant number of applications during the initial 2023 expansion. A lottery was used to determine the order in which new expansion acres would be allocated. The SMRID will continue to work through the existing lottery application list, and applicants who were waitlisted during the 2023 expansion will retain their place in the queue for future expansion opportunities. These 1,500 additional irrigation acres are supported thanks to water savings achieved by converting canals to pipelines through SMRID’s participation in the Alberta Irrigation Modernization (AIM) program. Investments in infrastructure modernization completed since 2020 have resulted in an additional 25,000 ac-ft of water savings annually. Significant investments in canal-to-pipeline rehabilitation projects continue to create water savings and efficiencies in our District allowing the district to irrigate more acres using less water.
